How do I prepare for polysomnography?

Polysomnography is performed at night, in the clinic or at home (a specialist comes to the apartment, attaches sensors and monitors sleep throughout the night).

How do I prepare for polysomnography?

Before the test, do not take drinks or food containing alcohol or caffeine during the afternoon and evening. Alcohol and caffeine can affect your sleep patterns and worsen the symptoms of your sleep disorder. It is also important to stay awake during the day before the study.

Before the study, you are allowed to shower before polysomnography but do not use lotions, gels, perfumes, skin sprays or cosmetics so that the sensors can come in direct contact with your skin.

If you are due for a sleep study at the clinic:

  • You should arrive on site between 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
  • You spend the night in a designated room and are under polysomnographic observation until 9:00 a.m. (you may bring your own nightgown).
  • The room where the polysomnography is performed is isolated. During the study, the room is dark and quiet, with continuous video/audio surveillance.
  • Before going to sleep, the specialist attaches sensors to the scalp, temples, chest, and legs with a soft adhesive. Cords connect the sensors to a computer. The length of the cords allows you to move freely in bed. Small clips are attached to the finger or ear to monitor the oxygen level in the blood.

You will receive a report within 72 hours after the study! After polysomnography, you will be able to return to your usual way of life.
