The bust of the founder of Georgian ophthalmology - Giorgi Tarsaidze opened
The bust of the founder of Georgian ophthalmology - Giorgi Tarsaidze was opened on the 11th of October at the “National Center of Ophthalmology” of “New Hospitals” to commemorate World Sight Day. Georgian and foreign ophthalmologists, founders of the PSP Group, representatives of the National Center for Ophthalmology and Giorgi Tarsaidze's family members attended the event.
Giorgi Tarsaidze occupies an honorary place in the history of Georgian medicine. His contribution to the establishment and development of Georgian ophthalmology is outstanding. Giorgi Tarsaidze was the first Georgian physician-ophthalmologist who returned to his homeland after receiving medical education abroad and in 1892 founded the first Georgian Ophthalmological Institution – “Charity Hospital of Eye Diseases”. “Republican Clinical Hospital of Eye Diseases", on the bases of which the “National Center for Ophthalmology” was established later was named after him.
As the Director of “New Hospitals” - George Ramishvili said, on the initiative of “National Center for Ophthalmology”, in connection with World Sight Day, a foundation is laid for the establishment of the “Union of Development of Georgian Ophthalmology, and significant activities are being planned aimed at reducing ophthalmological diseases in Georgia and raising of awareness of disease treatment and prevention opportunities. Free screening campaigns will be held both for both young and older people. The institution for the patients suffering from glaucoma and cataract will start functioning. It will provide patients with detailed information about diseases and their treatment plan.
